The First Day in Orlyonok

On the first day in Orlyonok, when our Birobidzhan delegation arrived at the Camp, we met a lot of new children who became dear to me. We also had the first camp fire, where we learned more about each other and united. And by now we became such good friends, that I can’t say for sure how we’ll be able to part without tears.

Excursion

Two delegations – from Stavropol and Birobidzhan arrived at Solnechny Camp. We had a lot of things to do: registration, meeting with the counselors, moving into the house, unpacking, etc. After all these we went to the canteen for lunch. Orlyonok is very huge. It comprises 7 different camps. And we were looking forward to seeing all its sights. Our counselors were like real guides. They showed us everything quickly enough and told many stories and legends about Orlyonok. While we were walking in the camp, we saw many unusual plants. Some of them were very rare. We also visited the Palace of Culture and Sports. There is a large swimming pool, a concert hall, an Internet room, etc. there. Then we visited a camp library. It is called “Drugstore for your soul”.

Stavropolsky Kray Coat of Arms

There are a lot of books of various genres there. There is an exhibition room in the building of the library where we saw wonderful handmade dolls. Almost every place in Orlyonok has its own legend. Everything seems so magical in Orlyonok. Where else can you see the Bridge of Silence, the Bridge of Compliments and the Square of Tears? Fountains in Orlyonok are worth of admiration, too. So, we all became open-mouthed with surprise when we saw real carps and goldfish in the fountain’s water.

All in all, that was an unforgettable excursion. It gave all the kids the chance to know each other better. We took a lot of pictures and had great fun together.

Parliament at the School Level

Our shift was called “The Junior Parliament”. We made a project about Access “Volunteer Movement”. We wanted our Republic to have the Junior Parliament. I think all people should learn English because it’s an international language. We want children give up bad habits and learn English instead. We called our project “BashStyle”.

The Republic of Bashkortostan Coat of Arms

There were five girls from Ufa there.

At the beginning of our project Ilgiza and I danced a national Bashkir dance. It was really exciting. Everybody was applauding. Then we showed our presentation. It was about the advantages of learning foreign languages. Other candidates spoke about ecology, sport etc. Our counselors helped us with the

project. Besides projects on school

level there were projects on regional and federal levels. There were 12 candidates on school level, but we were the best. The Jury liked our project most and advised us to include volunteer movement in it.

Easter Day

April, 4 was the most pleasant day for me. It was Easter. Our company had Easter eggs and some sweets in the canteen. In the evening we celebrated Easter during the Access lesson.

Firstly, we read about Easter traditions in different countries. It was very interesting to learn about American traditions. I learned that American children believe in a special rabbit who gives them presents and sweets. This rabbit is called Easter Bunny. Then we sang an Easter song. It was funny to sing together.

While we were singing our friendship became much stronger. We also had some crosswords which were connected with Easter. At the end of the lesson our group was offered to draw our own Easter eggs, then we had to present eggs to somebody we liked. When our Access group met in the room we glued our eggs on the poster. After that each person described his/her egg and wished something nice to the group. We had kind and warm atmosphere in the room. Everyone smiled and I think we became closer to each other.

That day was devoted to the 50th anniversary of Orlyonok. In the morning children went to the swimming pool. In the evening everyone was invited to enjoy watching the film  “Orlyonok: yesterday, today, tomorrow”. Campers were surprised to see how their favorite camp looked years ago. Sunny Legend

This story happened here when there were tents instead of the cozy cottages. The best kids from the entire Russia arrived at the Solnechny Camp. Cheerful and enthusiastic counselors met them at the Camp. Everything could be better if the sun was shining. It had been raining for a long time. The sky was overcast. The campers had to stay in their tents. They could go nowhere. It had been raining cats and dogs for such a long time that the water gradually penetrated into the tents. “What shall we do?” – the kids wondered. They could not understand who had offended the Sun, and why it was crying. They decided to make a present to the Sun so that it would give them its warmth. All of sudden, a boy who was quietly sitting in the corner of the tent, began singing a well-known song: “A sunny circle, the sky is around. This is a boy’s picture…” All the kids  joined in a song. And a counselor said: Let’s paint the Sun! All the kids rushed for their paints and brushes and started painting. But all their efforts were in vain, as the picture was washed off by the rain. The kids took their umbrellas, surrounded their painters protecting them from the rain. It took them the whole day to finish their picture. When the picture of the Sun was ready, the kids put their umbrellas away. A bright shining Sun was looking at sky. As it was very late, the campers returned to their tents. In the morning they were awoken by a wonderful sunrise. Since then the Camp is sunlit. But if somebody walks across this picture, the Sun will be offended, and it will rain. Usually, when a shift starts, it rains heavily because some counselors forget to tell the kids this sunny legend immediately. And some kids may walk across this picture. To please the Sun, the counselors created a song “The Rays of the Solnechny Camp”.

We Can Save our Planet!

That was a beautiful day!  During the first half of the day we had an intellectual game about ecology. It was very interesting. There were a lot of interesting questions about nature, some kinds of trees, bushes and about their healthy qualities. At the first stage all our answers were correct. I was the captain of our Company. During the second half of the day we watched the film “Ecological Footprint”.

It was a statistics film. It was very interesting but sometimes it scared me. I learned a lot of facts about human life. I liked it.

Unforgettable Lesson

On April, 12 John Silver visited our Access lesson. He told us about the country which is situated near Egypt. It’s called Yemen. He told that in its capital Sanaa men wear jambiyas. He also told us what these jambiyas are made of. It was an unforgettable lesson. John also gave us a task. We should create a thing which would make our poor imaginary city rich and popular. And we as imaginary citizens would become wealthy and famous.

All the projects were very interesting. Our team made a funny project. That day was wonderful!

Tastes Differ

There were many different clubs in our Solnechny Camp. For example, shooting, parachuting, motoring, flower design, astronomy, fox hunting, etc. We went to a motoring club. We learned and discussed traffic regulations and other interesting things. Also we practiced to drive a car. At the last lesson we had to pass a test in traffic regulations. Some of us learned shooting techniques. They also watched a film about the art of shooting. Some of the campers chose parachuting. They practiced to fold a parachute.

They also took virtual lessons in using a parachute. Many girls enjoyed attending a flower design club. They created a lot of beautiful flowers.  The flowers were made from ribbons and construction paper.  It was wonderful. In our astronomy club the teacher told the campers different legends about stars and galaxies and showed them interesting films. So, you can see that all the campers enjoyed attending different clubs.

My City, my Town

On April, 14 we presented our regions to John Silver. Firstly, teens from Stavropol introduced their Motherland. It was interesting to know about the place where they are living. Nikita, Ira, Vlad, Anya, Sonya, Yaroslava told some facts about their native city. Then, another delegation began their story. Everyone from Birobidzhan told about their town. They showed us pictures of different buildings and monuments. I liked the architecture of Birobidzhan.

So, after their presentation was our turn. I think that John liked our project. After that John showed us some photos from his travelling. That was funny and good. And we all enjoyed it.

English Everywhere

Regardless of distances, languages, cultural differences, we all live together in a small world.

It’s world of laughter,

a world of tears,

it’s a world of hopes,

and a world of fears;

there’s so much that we share

that it’s time we’re aware

it’s a small, small world!

Access Sites Presentation

In the morning we had an unusual Access lesson. All three delegations prepared presentations about their native cities. It was extremely interesting. Colorful and bright

photos of the cities, native dances and interesting stories made us think that we were on a real excursion! Who could ask for more? But that was not the end. A great surprise was waiting for everybody! That lesson we had a great guest – John Silver. He told us about his Motherland California and some other countries he had visited. John showed us a lot of photos and told many captivating stories. Everybody tried to ask John first. It was an unforgettable lesson!

Hobby Groups Outcome

The last day of hobby groups.

This was a very special day for everyone. We attended our hobby groups classes last time. Everyone got a certificate of completion. Somebody became a pilot, others became drivers. For example, I attended “Flower Design” hobby club. During the classes in this club we learned to make flowers from fabric. These flowers were very beautiful. And the process was great and exciting. Orlyonok’s hobby groups are very cool, interesting and great!!! I hope that everyone enjoyed it.

Access at the Seaside

According to our schedule we were going to have our Access lesson in the evening. As far as the weather was wonderful, we offered our teacher Natalia to have a lesson at the seaside. She did not mind, and we were happy to go there. We played different brainstorming games in English.

We learned a lot of words describing sea, sand, and seaside activities. When we were playing, all of a sudden, the ball fell into the water. We all panicked, but Yaroslava jumped into the sea and caught the ball. We were all shocked as the water was pretty cold. After that we called Yaroslava “the heroine of the day”.

Later we admired an incredible sunset and took a lot of pictures. At that moment we saw John, walking along the shore, and we invited him to join us. The pictures with John turned out to be really cool!

He also encouraged us to take part in a stone contest called “frog”. Then on the sand we created two words: ACCESS and 2nd COMPANY. It was a great day. We were impressed that John visited us. He wished us luck and success. Unfortunately, he was leaving the camp that evening. We also wished John that all his dreams would come true. It was such a memorable day!
